Gods of Love
God and gods to claim transcendence
Hope that every heart adores,
Twist and turn, the pages burn,
As self-inclined delight explores.
All those gods of our excitement
Move the flutt’ring heart to sailing,
Made to rise with love and sighs,
But made no less, and therefore failing.
Trundle forth the gods of glory,
Deities that float our graces,
Visions clear of God appear
But mirrors to our gazing faces.
Give me, God, a God who hates me,
Truths I cannot love or mention.
Better hell, if there You dwell,
Than gods of love of my invention.
