Seeker of what? \u00a0The lover of one’s own fulfillment seeks a god of his own invention, the god of his own interests. \u00a0Here, again, is the\u00a0idolatrous\u00a0humility of those for whom “Truth is too great.” \u00a0But if I could, I would give the\u00a0idolater\u00a0such a glory in himself that he would want something even more glorious. \u00a0“Do you not see,” we might urge, “how wonderful it is to desire knowledge? \u00a0How glorious it is to know the makeup of distant galaxies or the chemical composition of\u00a0chlorophyll. \u00a0Describe chemical bonding, solve a math problem, and your mind moves the universe.” \u00a0Then the voice drops to a whisper and we say, “Then consider that you are equally, or even more so, called to know God.” \u00a0We smile vaguely, slightly hopeful. \u00a0But the seeker, almost offended, replies,”Oh, no! \u00a0I would never be so arrogant! \u00a0I shall be humbly satisfied with the god that I have invented.” \u00a0And so is the seeker no seeker at all.<\/p>\n
